Music has been used therapeutically throughout history in a way that was congruent with society’s contemporary theories and perceptions about illness.
In preliterate societies, illness was looked at as a punishment, and using music was a way to appease some supernatural power or whoever was doing the punishing so that the illness would be mitigated. So we have that model.
After that we have the model of the “four humors”*—in other words, the balance of the four humors—as the preeminent medical model of perceiving illness that lasted for a couple thousand years … and eventually it gets tied to the four parts of four-part harmony in music.
